Whisky Cocktails and Mixers for Pubs and Bars

Whisky offers an enormous range of flavours, from lighter and sweeter styles to rich, smoky drams. That variety also makes it a versatile spirit for cocktails and mixed drinks. Scotch whisky, bourbon and American rye each bring something different to the glass. Therefore, choosing the right mixer can help complement the character of the spirit. For pubs, clubs and bars, whisky can go well beyond serving a dram on its own. Here are some classic cocktails and simple mixer combinations worth knowing. Old Fashioned The Old Fashioned is one of the best-known whisky cocktails. Traditionally, it combines whisky with sugar, bitters and a citrus garnish. Bourbon and rye are both popular choices, although recipes and preferences vary. The relatively simple recipe allows the character of the whisky to remain prominent. As a result, it appeals particularly to customers who enjoy spirit-led cocktails. It is usually served over ice in a short glass and finished with orange peel. Whisky Sour The Whisky Sour brings together whisky, fresh lemon and sugar syrup. The result combines sweet and sharp flavours while still allowing the whisky to come through. Some recipes also include egg white, which creates a smooth texture and distinctive foamy top. However, an egg-free version can also be served. The Whisky Sour is a useful addition to a cocktail menu because its ingredients are relatively straightforward. Furthermore, variations can be created using different whiskies and flavour combinations. Manhattan The Manhattan is traditionally made with American whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters. Rye is a classic choice, although bourbon is also commonly used. The ingredients are stirred with ice before being strained into a cocktail glass. Rich and aromatic, the Manhattan has remained a favourite among whiskey drinkers for generations. It also provides an excellent contrast to longer drinks made with soft drink mixers. Mint Julep Closely associated with the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep combines bourbon, fresh mint, sugar and crushed ice. It is traditionally served in a metal julep cup. However, as with many classic cocktails, presentation can be adapted to suit the venue. Fresh mint and plenty of ice make it particularly refreshing during warmer weather. Meanwhile, bourbon provides the distinctive whisky character underneath. Rob Roy The Rob Roy is closely related to the Manhattan but replaces American whiskey with Scotch whisky. It usually combines Scotch, sweet vermouth and bitters before being finished with a cherry or citrus garnish. Blended Scotch is commonly used, although different whiskies can change the character of the finished drink. For customers who enjoy Scotch but fancy something different from a straight dram, the Rob Roy provides an established alternative. What Mixers Go Well with Whisky? Whisky cocktails have their place, but a simple spirit and mixer remains an important part of bar service. Cola is perhaps one of the most familiar choices. Its sweetness can work particularly well with bourbon and many blended whiskies. Ginger is another excellent partner. The stronger flavour can complement whisky without completely overwhelming its character. Meanwhile, lemonade provides a lighter option. Whisky can also be served with soda water for customers who want a longer drink without adding too much sweetness. Ultimately, the best combination depends on both the whisky and personal preference. Keeping Whisky and Mixer Service Simple During a busy service, straightforward drinks need to be exactly that: straightforward. Post-mix soft drinks allow bar staff to dispense popular mixers quickly at the point of sale. Consequently, whisky and mixer combinations can be prepared without repeatedly opening individual bottles. Consistency matters as well. Reliable dispensing equipment helps provide a consistent mixer while keeping service moving. Moreover, the same post-mix flavours can be used with numerous spirits. Cola, lemonade and other mixers can therefore work across a much wider drinks menu.
